"Why," you ask? Because we want profile pages to have freedom of customization, but also to have some consistency. This way, when anyone visits a deviant, they know they can always find the art in the top left, and personal info in the top right.
Don't forget, restraints can bring out the creativity in you!

Basically you submit works to them and participate in the missions they give you. Usually they have one main mission, along with a few side missions to do if you aren't interested in that.
However, you are on a clock with each mission. They usually give you plenty of time, and leave the storyline fairly open so you can do as you please with most works.
It helps you not only expand your amount of viewers, but also helps you improve your way of storytelling, writing, and completing great works of art.
You basically start off with one, or two mons, and start working from there. There is a lot to read in the rules, FAQ, and stuff like that, but once you are in and doing missions, it can get pretty fun.
Since I'm a writer, I don't /fully/ know how the art stuff works, but hey, I thought that if anyone should join this group, it would be you.
